Information Rights Management (IRM) 101: Data Privacy Mechanism

One of the features that helps ensure ITAR compliance within the cloud is known as Information Rights Management (IRM). IRM is a tool by which Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and other confidential or sensitive information are protected in a variety of ways. You may be familiar with Digital Rights Management (DRM), which is integrated within files to protect media such as movies or music.

IRM, however, deals with information and documents, and the management aspect refers to the ways by which they can be controlled. IRM can control the way a document is viewed and edited according to parameters set by an administrator.

One of the most basic ways IRM works is through information encryption. Through the utilization of a key or password, certain recipients may be authorized to access specific data. The next way, which is more common, is through permissions management. This could cause a specific document to be ‘locked’, which would prevent downloading, copying and pasting the material, screenshots, printing or editing.
